Our Roots: The Story Behind Our Name
Kranji Primary School takes its name from the Keranji tree (Dialium indum), a tall tropical evergreen that once grew abundantly in the forests and riverbanks of northwestern Singapore. Its presence was so closely associated with the area that it gave the Kranji region its name. Today, this heritage lives on in familiar landmarks such as the Kranji Expressway, Kranji Road and Kranji War Memorial.
Living Our Values throught Our Heritage
The Keranji tree symbolises resilience, strength, and growth. These qualities reflect the strength of character, love for learning, and growth in leadership that our school seeks to nurture in every Kranjian. In particular, the distinctive characteristics of the Keranji tree are reflected in our school’s core values:
Resilience: Prized for its strong, durable timber, the Keranji tree stands firm against the elements. In the same way, we encourage our students to face challenges with courage, perseverance, and the confidence to rise again after setbacks.
Responsibility and Integrity: Growing up to 40 metres tall, the Keranji tree provides shelter and helps stabilise the surrounding soil. Likewise, Kranjians learn to act with integrity, take responsibility for their choices, and stand tall as dependable members of the community.
Compassion and Respect: The tree is valued for its bark and leaves, which have traditionally been used to relieve pain, treat infections, and heal wounds. This reminds us to treat others with respect and extend care and compassion to those around us.
A Unique Natural Wonder
Beyond its strength and symbolism, the Keranji tree also holds a fascinating place in local biodiversity.
The Velvet Tamarind: The tree produces small, distinctive fruit pods with a soft, velvety texture. Inside is a vibrant orange pulp with a sweet-and-sour flavour that is often compared with the tamarind, yet has a distinctive character of its own.
Spotting Our Heritage Today
The Keranji tree can still be found in Singapore today, including along the “Streets of Singapore Walk” at HortPark and near the summit of Bukit Timah Hill.
Carrying Forward the Kranji Legacy
Kranji Primary School is proud to carry forward the heritage of the Keranji tree. Its enduring presence reminds us of our roots, our connection to the community, and our commitment to nurturing Kranjians who are resilient in spirit, grounded in values, and ready to contribute meaningfully to society.
